Miri is Sarawak's second-largest city, a coastal town near the Brunei border that grew up around Malaysia's first oil well, drilled here in 1910, and remains a base for the region's petroleum industry today. Beyond its oil-town roots, Miri has become northern Borneo's main tourism gateway, the jumping-off point for the Niah Caves and the UNESCO-listed Gunung Mulu National Park. Hotels here serve a mix of oil-and-gas corporate travel and nature-focused tourists passing through en route to the national parks, with the compact downtown waterfront the main hub for both.
