Sihanoukville is Cambodia's principal coastal resort town on the Gulf of Thailand, roughly a 2.5-hour drive from Phnom Penh via the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway and served by its own international airport. The town has seen a wave of casino-driven development in recent years, leaving a mix of finished resorts and unfinished construction around its edges, but its beaches -- Independence Beach and Otres among them -- and ferry access to the Koh Rong islands remain the main draw for leisure travellers. Hotel coverage here is almost entirely beachfront resort-style rather than city business hotels.
