Somewhere Lombok is a small beach-chic retreat on the island's south coast, conceived, designed and run by Hong Kong-raised sisters Claire and Valia Gontard and enrolled with Marriott Bonvoy as a Member of Design Hotels. Twenty standalone villas cascade down a jungle cliffside above Are Guling Bay, each with a private plunge pool, floor-to-ceiling windows, handmade Indonesian furnishings and a deliberately TV-free calm. A saltwater infinity pool, open-plan restaurant and bar anchor communal life, with independent reviewers consistently praising the warm, intuitive service, the panoramic hilltop and ocean views, and the locally sourced Indonesian-fusion cooking, from jackfruit rendang to a plentiful included breakfast. Sustainability runs through the build, developed with eco-consultants and drawing on regionally sourced materials and nearby artisans, farmers and fishermen. Watch-outs are consistent across reviews: the steep, stair-linked hillside is genuinely hard for guests with limited mobility, in-villa air-conditioning and mini-fridges can struggle to cool, and small design gaps let insects in.
