Lone Pine, Penang, a Tribute Portfolio Resort
Batu Ferringhi
A 90-room boutique beachfront resort on Batu Ferringhi beach, Penang. Established in 1948 as a 10-room family bungalow, it reopened in July 2023 after a full restoration as Marriott Bonvoy's Tribute Portfolio, blending mid-century Malayan colonial charm with contemporary comforts.
Lone Pine is a long-established boutique resort on Batu Ferringhi beach that traces its roots to 1948, when Australian physician Dr Albert McKern turned a beachfront bungalow into a 10-room family hotel. After a loving restoration it reopened on 1 July 2023 as Marriott Bonvoy's second Tribute Portfolio property in Malaysia, now offering 90 spacious sea-facing rooms, most with a private balcony, plunge tub and day bed. It holds roughly a 4.0/5 rating on TripAdvisor across more than 1,900 reviews (ranked around #44 of 194 in Batu Ferringhi). Independent reviewers consistently praise the intimate, tranquil grounds shaded by mature casuarina trees, a large pool that feels secluded, an enormous breakfast buffet mixing European and Penang dishes (freshly cooked eggs, char koay teow), and warm, attentive service. The setting is a genuine beachfront with easy access to Batu Ferringhi's hawker stalls, bars and restaurants. Watch-outs are consistent across recent reviews: room quality and housekeeping can be uneven, with some guests reporting tired, dusty rooms, dirty shower screens, thin towels and slow Wi-Fi, and some long-time visitors feeling the Marriott rebrand diluted the original character. Beach sand erosion has also been noted at times.
